When the hip-hop world found out that Yung Miami, one half of the dynamic City Girls duo, had snagged the Best Hip-Hop Platform award at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards for her show Caresha Please! it was like tossing a grenade into a room full of opinionated fans.
As expected, the announcement drew mixed reactions, with some celebrating her win and others questioning how a relatively new podcast could beat out seasoned contenders like Drink Champs, Million Dollaz, The Joe Budden Podcast, and others. Charlamagne Tha God, co-host of the popular radio show The Breakfast Club, was among the skeptics.
Charlamagne didn’t hold back when he said, “We gotta stop. Salute to Caresha. I love Yung Miami to death…but come on now. Two years in a row!? I got mad love for Caresha, but you’ve got platforms that come out daily, and you’ve got platforms that come out weekly.” He even hinted at a conspiracy, saying, “I love Caresha Please, but was that sponsored by DeLeon?” – a tongue-in-cheek reference to Diddy possibly pulling strings behind the scenes.
Yung Miami, never one to shy away from confrontation, fired back on social media, saying, “YALL LEAVE ME [THE F###] ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!” But she didn’t stop there. When given the chance to address the critics face-to-face on The Breakfast Club, she seized the moment to set the record straight.
On October 26, The Breakfast Club released an interview with the City Girls, who are riding high on the release of their third studio album, “RAW.” During the hour-long conversation, Yung Miami tackled head-on the controversy surrounding her BET Hip-Hop Award win, shutting down doubters with her trademark confidence.
“People always saying I don’t deserve stuff. Why don’t I deserve anything?” she asked. “I work hard. I deserve everything,” Miami declared. “When I just did my first live podcast, it was around the corner. It’s new. We’re in a new time. We’re in a new generation. I’m bringing something new, so why I don’t deserve it?”
Miami continued, “God put me here for a reason and this what he had for me. This was destined for me. So don’t say I don’t deserve it, just say you were salty.”
