Young Thug, the charismatic rap sensation, is making headlines yet again. This time, his lawyer has pulled out all the stops in an audacious move to dismiss the RICO charges filed against all the co-defendants in the case. The legal mastermind behind this bold maneuver is none other than Brian Steel, Thug’s attorney, who is seeking to exploit the statute of limitations as a legal lifeline.
According to exclusive documents obtained by XXL, Steel filed a motion last Friday, June 23, demanding the dismissal of RICO charges for all the YSL co-defendants, including the enigmatic Thug himself. The crux of Steel’s argument lies in the contention that any allegations dating back more than five years prior to the arrest are beyond the statute of limitations for a RICO charge and must be expunged from the indictment.
Quoting directly from the motion, Steel states, “In order to satisfy the crime of RICO conspiracy, the prosecution must prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that at least one (1) overt act was committed in furtherance of the conspiracy within the Statute of Limitations.” He further explains that the overt act must have occurred within five (5) years of the filing of the Bill of Indictment with the Clerk of Court.
The motion goes on to dismantle the prosecution’s case, stating, “Both the original Indictment as well as the re-Indictment have overt acts numbers 1 through approximately 61 with a date more than five (5) years before the return of the Indictment.” Steel asserts that these overt acts fall outside the statute of limitations and cannot support a conviction.
If successful, this motion has the potential to deal a significant blow to the prosecutor’s case against Thug and the YSL co-defendants. It’s a high-stakes gamble that could tip the scales of justice in their favor. However, only time will tell whether this legal maneuver will yield the desired results.
In addition to the motion to dismiss based on the statute of limitations, Thug’s legal team is leaving no stone unturned. They have also filed a motion to suppress evidence related to an undisclosed murder case. The motion claims that the prosecution and some of its witnesses, including Detective Quinn, may falsely state that Thug provided information on the case while in the back of a police car. Steel dismisses these claims as untrue and irrelevant, emphasizing that they occurred when Thug was much younger. He further alleges witness intimidation by the prosecution.

Ever since Thug’s arrest in May 2022, where he and his YSL co-defendants were hit with a barrage of RICO charges, the rapper has been fighting to prove his innocence. While some of his co-defendants, like Gunna, have taken plea deals and been released, Thug has remained incarcerated. He recently released his new album, Business Is Business, while behind bars, showing his unwavering dedication to his craft.
The album itself is framed by commercially appealing tracks featuring Drake and Nate Reuss, suggesting a chart-friendly approach and potential exploration of his legal situation. However, Thug’s writing has always been more nuanced, often conveying major themes through hints and subtle references rather than explicit storytelling. While the album features commercial elements, such as collaborations with A-list artists, it remains true to Young Thug’s unique style.
The album has faced a significant drop in sales projections for its first week. What was projected to turn out 110K has now dropped to 87k, intensifying the comparison between his controversial fellow YSL partner, Gunna. Gunna’s album, a Gift & a Curse, debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 with 85k in first-week sales, seen by some as underwhelming. The album specifically discussed Gunna’s involvement in the RICO case and addressed snitching allegations.
Despite the challenges of creating an album from behind bars, Business Is Business captures the essence of Thug’s style and creativity. It’s a testament to his ability to deliver compelling music even under constrained circumstances. With Business Is Business, he once again proves that his unconventional approach to music sets him apart in the industry.
The outcome of this legal battle remains uncertain, but Thug and his legal team are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice. The courtroom drama continues to unfold, with jury selection currently underway. One thing is for sure: Young Thug’s fight for freedom is far from over, and his loyal fans eagerly await the next chapter in this captivating saga.
