Florida rapper YNW Melly has requested to temporarily leave jail to treat an infection caused by his diamond grill.
Melly, whose real name is Jamell Maurice Demons, reportedly requested to leave Broward County Jail to receive medical care for the infection. Court documents indicate that it was caused by the musician’s inability to clean his diamond teeth properly, as he hasn’t had access to dental floss, a regular toothbrush, and regular dental visits.
“As a result, he has an abscess in his lower jaw that is creating extreme pain and chronic infection,” Melly’s attorney, Raven Liberty, stated.
She explained that his diamond grill “require[s] constant upkeep and at the bare minimum regular flossing and brushing” and asked that he be allowed to seek dental care, so his oral infection doesn’t get worse. The medical professionals at Broward County Jail reportedly don’t have the right tools to treat or clean it, so his legal team has contacted a dentist willing to help. However, it’s up to the court to approve the request.
Melly reportedly has the funds and private insurance to cover expenses regarding the medical leave, including transportation and appointments. He’s been jailed since February 2019 on double homicide charges in the fatal 2018 shooting of his longtime friends YNW Juvy (20) and YNW Sakchaser (21). In July, a judge tossed the death penalty as a possible sentence for the 23-year-old.
Melly’s diamond grill dilemma comes as no surprise, as the rapper is known for wearing lots of ice. He was featured on popular Atlanta jewelry store Icebox’s YouTube channel twice, including in 2019, for ordering a diamond chain while behind bars.
One of his most popular songs to date is “Mixed Personalities,” featuring award-winning rapper Kanye West. The song currently has racked up a whopping 159 million views and counting via Melly’s official YouTube channel.
