The Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, are teaming up to executive produce a new documentary about the 1971 Women’s World Cup.

The Williams sisters will team up with Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Westbrook Studios to develop the COPA 71 documentary highlighting the unsung story of the pioneering women who fought to make the tournament a reality. The documentary will also be co-directed by James Erskine and Rachel Ramsay.

The Women’s World Cup of 1971 was held in Mexico City and won by Denmark. The tournament had over 10,000 spectators. It was a groundbreaking moment in the history of women’s sports, paving the way for future generations of female athletes to compete on a global stage. However, the story of the tournament and the women who made it happen has often gone overlooked.

The women who played in the tournament faced discrimination, lack of support, and even hostility from those who opposed women’s participation in sports. Despite the obstacles, the women persevered and their impact on women’s sports can still be felt today.

In their upcoming documentary, Serena and Venus Williams aim to shed light on the unsung heroes of the 1971 Women’s World Cup. They will tell the stories of the women who fought for the right to play, the challenges they faced, and the impact they had on the world of women’s sports.

Serena told Variety, “Copa 71 tells the story of one of the most inspirational and significant moments in women’s sports history. It’s an honor to partner with my sisters and Westbrook Studios to help bring this magical story to light, which has been buried for far too long.”

Venus said, “When I heard about the 1971 Women’s World Cup, I couldn’t believe this incredible story was erased from our history book. I’m excited to team with my sisters and Westbrook Studios to help elevate and empower fellow female athletes and their accomplishments, and to make sure these women have their voices heard through this inspiring documentary.”

The film has no projected release date yet but it is sure to be a memorable and historic showing.
