Actor Will Smith recently spoke about his open marriage to Jada Pinkett-Smith and said they have separate lives while being together.
Smith continues to promote his memoir, “Will,” and has opened up and given details into his marriage to Pinkett-Smith, which is nontraditional.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey on Apple TV’s The Oprah Conversation, Winfrey asked Smith about the details of his decision to have an open marriage to his wife.

“Those early days were spectacular. Me and Jada, to this day, if we start talking, it’s four hours. It’s four hours if we exchange a sentence. It’s the center of why we’ve been able to sustain and why we’re still together, not choking the life out of each other,” he began. “The ability to work through issues, I’ve never met another person that I connect with in conversation more blissfully and productively than Jada.”
Winfrey also brought up the question about how long the two had separated. Winfrey stated that people “never actually understood” their reasoning behind separating and asked if it was “months or years.”
Will replied and said, “Ya know… It’s really funny… We didn’t… We never actually like officially separated,” speaking about the legal aspect of separation.
Smith said that he took three years to plan his wife’s 40th birthday to be something special for her in 2011, but she didn’t enjoy it, and that’s when things in their relationship took a turn for the worst.
Smith then said that the two of them weren’t making each other happy.
“We realized that it was a fantasy illusion that we could make each other happy,” Smith said. “We agreed that she had to make herself happy, and I had to make myself happy. Then we were going to present ourselves back to the relationship already happy — versus demanding that the other person fill our empty cup.”
He said, “We just decided, ‘You have to figure out how to be happy.” Then he added that it was more controversial to him than to Jada, adding that he told her, “‘Go figure out if you can be happy and prove to me it’s even possible.’ I’m gonna do me, and you do you.”
Smith then said that “no woman” or “no man” can make either of them happy. “We both know that there is no person that will fill your hole,” he said.
Smith’s memoir is set to be released on November 9, according to Too Fab.
