Whoopi Goldberg Apologizes For Using Racial Slur On ‘The View’

Actress and talk show host Whoopi Goldberg publicly apologized for using a racial slur during Wednesday’s taping of The View.

In a YouTube clip of the segment, Goldberg and cohosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Sara Haines were all discussing former President Donald Trump and porn star Stormy Daniels’ affair.

One of Trump’s lawyers claimed his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid Daniels “hush money.” Reports showed that Trump sent Cohen reimbursement checks from his “personal funds” to pay Cohen back. The “hush money” was paid because Trump is a so-called family man and wanted to protect his son and wife, Melania.

Whoopi stated, “The people who still believe that he got ‘gypped’ somehow in the election will still believe he cared about his wife to pay…that money from his personal thing. But I just don’t understand. If that was the case, then why all the subterfuge?”

The View posted a video of Goldberg apologizing for using the slur.

“You know, when you’re a certain age, you use words that you know from when you were a kid or you remember saying…and that’s what I did today. I shouldn’t have,” she said in the video. “I should’ve thought about it a little longer before I said it, but I didn’t. And I should’ve said ‘cheated’ and I used another word. I’m really, really sorry.”

According to NPR, the word is offensive to people of Romani heritage. The word is an abbreviation of gypsy, which people

use when referring to Romani people. The term “Gypsy” comes with stereotypes, a popular one being that gypsies steal or cheat people out of things. So, “gypped” is offensive to Romani people because it associates all gypsies with the theft stereotype.

The View muted the word from the clip posted on their YouTube channel.
