HBO released the official trailer to the upcoming Donna Summer documentary, Love To Love You, Donna Summer, on April 28.
According to a Warner Bros. press release, the documentary will highlight the highs and lows the disco queen endured during her music career. Love To Love You, Donna Summer, provides an in-depth look into Summer’s artistry and how she transitioned from making music and engaging in Germany’s avant-garde music scene to becoming a worldwide superstar.
The documentary comprises never-seen-before home video footage and photographs documenting the “Bad Girls” singer’s life on and off the stage.
The trailer began with clips and photos of Summer and her voice in the background, explaining, “The audience would get completely uncontrollably. People would begin they’d like rip their clothes off and throw them on the stage: Bras, underwear. I didn’t know it was going to be like that racy.”
According to the documentary’s trailer, the “No More Tears” songstress struggled with everything that came with fame, especially since she was a private person. In addition to Summer’s hardships, the documentaryÂ
touched on the positive side of Summer’s career, like her music video for “She Works Hard for the Money,” which made her the first Black woman to have a music video debut on MTV.Oscar and Emmy-winning film producer Roger Ross Williams and Summer’s daughter, Brooklyn Sudano, directed Love To Love You, Donna Summer. The documentary features testimonies from her three daughters, Brooklyn, Mimi Dohler and Amanda Sudano Ramirez.
Other interviewees include Summer’s husband, Bruce Sudano; the “I Feel Love” singer’s siblings, Dara Bernard, Mary Ellen Bernard and Ric Gaines; her first husband, Helmuth Sommer, whose last name she anglicized for her stage name.Â
The documentary will include her manager Susan Manao, band member Bob Conti and producer Giorgio Moroder.
Love To Love You, Donna Summer premiered internationally at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival and domestically at the South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival. The documentary will hit HBO on Saturday, May 20 (8 p.m.-10 p.m. ET/PT) and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
