BET has dropped a trailer for the legendary ’90s sitcom Martin reunion, dedicated to its beloved character Tommy.
The network released the trailer on Jun. 6, which featured four of Martin‘s original cast members: Martin Lawrence (Martin Payne), Tisha Campbell (Gina Payne), Tichina Arnold (Pamela James), and Carl Anthony Payne II (Cole Brown). The sitcom first aired 30 years ago on FOX in August 1992 and has been a pop culture staple ever since.
“This one’s for you Tommy,” Lawrence, Campbell, Arnold, and Payne II said in unison as it opened. They sat as a group on the show’s famous green leather couch in lead character Martin Payne’s Detroit, Mich. apartment.
Thomas Mikal Ford, who portrayed Tommy Strawn, tragically passed away from a ruptured abdominal aneurysm in 2016 at age 52. He appeared on Martin as one of the main characters during the show’s five-season run from 1992 to 1997. Ford even received an NAACP Image Award in 1996 for his memorable role as Martin’s seemingly unemployed friend.
Award-winning rapper Snoop Dogg is also featured in the reunion trailer, sharing the cultural importance of Martin and how much he consumed the show.
“We would watch the show more than we would make music,” he said.
The special will be hosted by comedian Affion Crockett and feature appearances by Grammy Award-winning R&B singer and songwriter Brian McKnight and comedian Tommy Davidson.
BET previously announced it via an official statement back in February, with its CEO Scott Mills explaining how important the sitcom was to the Black community.
“Martin is one of the most beloved sitcoms in our community, both because it is hugely entertaining and because it played a pivotal role in changing the narrative of Black voices in entertainment and in culture through the portrayal of young, ambitious Black leads and healthy Black relationships,” Mills said.
The Martin reunion show is scheduled to air exclusively on June 16 via BET+ .
