Wakanda Forever: Danai Gurira Hints At ‘Black Panther’ Spinoff

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be in for a surprise. Danai Gurira, who plays female warrior Okoye in Marvel’s Black Panther films, maybe lead her own spinoff series.
Gurira, 44, also known for her role as Michonne on The Walking Dead, teased the possibility during a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
On Friday, when asked if she could confirm reports of a spinoff show featuring her character, she replied, “I have been told that I can gently allude to this possibility.
So, I am gently alluding, just gently.”

This isn’t the first potential spinoff Gurira may be involved with. In the summer of 2022, it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Michonne and Rick from The Walking Dead would return for a spinoff series.

Reports say the Rick and Michonne series will begin filming in Atlanta on January 6, 2023.

In the meantime, Gurira can be seen on the big screen in Wakanda Forever, where her character’s “strong Black woman” trope took a surprising turn.

“Okoye is a very palpable representation of that. But to actually see her fail, a lot of women came to me and talked about how they appreciated seeing her vulnerability and showing that we shouldn’t have to carry the world on our shoulders,” Gurira said. “And how do we process our own grief? Do we ever get to? The idea of her actually going through this failing…I realized how powerful it would be to actually allow a character like her to go through failing and complications that cause her to just not be able to stand strong and not hold everything together. She has to go through her brokenness too.”

Fans are excited about the prospect of seeing more of Gurira in a leading role. The actress has proven herself to be a talented and versatile performer, and a spinoff series would give her the opportunity to showcase her skills in a new and exciting way. We can’t wait.
