VIDEO: ‘The Woman King’ Official Trailer Is Finally Here

The official trailer for the historical epic film The Woman King starring Oscar Award-winning actress Viola Davis has finally arrived.

According to reports, the trailer was released on July 4 and uploaded to Sony Picture’s YouTube channel and The Woman King‘s Twitter and Instagram pages.

The film tells the story of a real-life all-female army called the Agoji from the former African kingdom of Dahomey, located in present-day Benin that was active during the 1800s and early 1900s. It follows Davis, who portrays a commander of the Agoji named Nanisca, as she prepares the next generation of warriors for battle against European colonizers.

In The Woman King, Nanisca warns King Ghezo, played by British Golden Globe-winning actor John Boyega, that the European invaders will do their best to take over their land.

The action-packed movie also features Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.

In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, Davis revealed that she trained vigorously for her role, say she did “weight training, sprinting, martial arts, and weaponry training for the machete.” She added that she’d like to say she was “the OG warrior.”

The 56-year-old took to Instagram on July 5 to repost an exclusive photo of herself and Boyega looking regal in an exclusive still from The Woman King.

“Exclusive: All hail the king. Viola Davis exudes a wholly new power in The Woman King, and V.F. has your official first look,” the post’s caption that was originally uploaded to Vanity Fair’s Instagram account said. “The historical epic, which storms into theaters this September, tells the story of the Agoji, a real-life army of women warriors who defended the powerful West African kingdom of Dahomey for centuries—and whom history has largely forgotten.”

The movie, directed by film director and screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood, is set to debut in theaters on Sept. 16th.
