The hit Starz series Power Book III: Raising Kanan is set to return for a second season.
Starz released a trailer for season two of Raising Kanan on May 24, revealing that it would officially premiere on Aug. 14. The trailer showed the fictional character Kanan Stark, played by actor MeKai Curtis, as he navigated the streets of New York City during the early ’90s. It also featured Kanan’s mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas, portrayed by Tony Award-winning actress Patina Miller.
Legendary award-winning actor Omar Epps and Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ are also set to return in their recurring roles in the series.
Raising Kanan is the only prequel in the Power franchise and initially debuted in July 2021. Its first season was narrated by Grammy Award-winning rapper 50 Cent.
“Raquel ‘Raq’ Thomas has gained control over the city’s drug trade, but her son is slipping away. Kanan Stark returns to Queens uncertain of his future with the family business, and because of Detective Howard’s lingering secret, he’s even more uncertain of his past,” a synopsis of its new season reportedly says.
“Kanan searches for the truth while Raq boldly expands the business into hostile Mafia territory. Lou-Lou has other plans that revolve around his emerging record label, but Raq isn’t about to let his side hustle get in the way of her expansion. Although Marvin remains Raq’s loyal soldier, he struggles to earn Jukebox’s forgiveness and become the father she deserves. The ties that bind this family are becoming undone, but Raq will stop at nothing to hold them together.”
50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, called the series his “favorite” in the Power franchise via an interview with EBONY in September 2021.
“This one is more personal. It’s my favorite out of them all so far,” he told the magazine.
