Rockdale County Public School (RCPS) administrators and local police are investigating a student’s brutal attack on a Heritage High School teacher in late January.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a viral video revealed that the unidentified female student and teacher, Tiwana Turner, got into an argument in the hallway that escalated into a physical altercation that left Turner with a broken leg.
In the video, the student allegedly yelled at the Georgia teacher before slamming a door to a class and pummeling Turner. The 27-year educator was taken to a local hospital.

The Rockdale County Public School District issued a statement regarding the violent incident.
“RCPS does not tolerate student violence towards any staff members. Students who harm other students or staff will be disciplined according to our Student Discipline Code of Conduct and will be appropriately charged by law enforcement.”
Georgia Federation of Teachers President Verdaillia Turner expressed her thoughts on “out of control” pupils.
“Students are out of control. There is no excuse for the violence. There is no excuse for children coming into our school daily and wreaking havoc so other students cannot learn,” she said.
A GoFundMe for the injured educator was created by Jean Cannon to help Turner with medical expenses.
“Hi, my name is Jean Cannon, and I am raising funds for a Public School Teacher, Tiwana Turner, who was attacked by a student. Tiwana Turner is an English Language Arts educator, and she has taught in public education for the past 27 years. On the morning of Thursday, January 26, 2023, Ms. Turner was covering another class in lieu of her co-worker’s absence,” she wrote.
“When Ms. Turner attempted to redirect the off-task behavior of one of the students, the student proceeded to physically attack her. During the attack, Ms. Turner was thrown to the ground and sustained multiple injuries. She is currently hospitalized with knee and leg injuries and is unable to walk. She will not be returning to work anytime soon, and she will require extensive rehabilitation and therapy.”
Cannon continued, “Yesterday, her life was suddenly altered, and now she will require several mobility accommodations while she recovers. This does not include the financial strain from fees associated with her hospitalization. While she has helped so many students and families during her 27 years in education. She is now in need of help and assistance. Any donation is greatly appreciated and will go directly towards her rehabilitation and hospitalization fees.”
The GoFundMe account is asking for $50,000. So far, 619 people have donated almost $19,000.
On February 2, Turner expressed her gratitude to those who graciously donated.
“Thank you to all parents, students, fellow educators, family, friends, and other outstanding people who are supporting me, praying for me, and showing much love to me during this time. Though my injuries are extensive, I know I will continue to heal and become stronger day by day. I am grateful to be able to draw strength from you.”
The Heritage High School student was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated battery.
