UPDATE: Pharrell Williams’ Cousin’s Death Ruled a Homicide

According to a recent autopsy report obtained by the New York Post, the death of Donovon W. Lynch, cousin to artist Pharrell Williams, has been officially ruled a homicide.

The incident left Donovon’s family feeling at a loss and in need of justice, and now the case will be assessed by a grand jury in September.

Williams has also spoken up about his late cousin’s death, saying that there are just “too many unanswered city and state questions.”

In June, Wayne Lynch, Donovon’s dad, chose to file a $50 million wrongful-death lawsuit that claimed Virginia Beach police officer Solomon Simmons, III, was responsible for fatally shooting his son “unlawfully and without warning.”

As previously reported

, Virginia Beach Police had formerly accused Donovon of “brandishing a handgun at the time of the shooting,” adding that “an independent witness corroborated that Mr. Lynch was in possession of a handgun earlier on the evening of March 26,” the department said.

However, Darrion Marsh, who was also a witness to the incident, had negated this statement, telling  the Washington Post in July that he “did not see Lynch pull out a gun before he was shot and that Simmons opened fire without warning as Marsh and Lynch retreated to their car following two earlier shootings that left one dead and eight injured.”

Wayne also said that Simmons “moved [Lynch’s] body around the area, contributing to his death,” and called him out for not having his body camera activated at the time of the incident, stating “no reasonable, appropriately trained officer would have” left his device off.

On March 29, Williams penned a heartfelt, now-deleted tweet in grievance of his cousin, saying, “The loss of these lives is a tragedy beyond measure. My cousin Donovon was killed during the shootings. He was a bright light and someone who always showed up for others. It is critical my family and the other victims’ families get the transparency, honesty and justice they deserve.”

No charges have been brought against Simmons.
