During a recent interview, NAACP Image Award-winning actress Tisha Campbell said, “It was hard to reconnect” with fellow NAACP Image Award-winning comedian and actor Martin Lawrence for the Martin reunion special.
Tisha revealed how difficult it was to link up with Martin during the interview on CBS Mornings, which aired on June 13.
“It was really fun to see you guys together too because you could tell there’s love there,” co-host Gayle King initially said about the special. “You know when the show ended, there was tension between you and Martin, you had filed a lawsuit against him, and he said it wasn’t true. How were you able to get back on track with him because clearly, you guys have worked it out.”
The Oklahoma City native responded, explaining that she and Martin mainly focused on coming together to celebrate the legendary show above everything else.
“We worked really hard to reconnect [and] to forgive,” she said. “This reunion is about a celebration of everything that we did, everything that we accomplished, and our growth as human beings. And so, we concentrated mostly on that.”
Back in 1997, the actress reportedly filed a lawsuit accusing Martin of sexual harassment. She then continued filming under terms that they wouldn’t be on set together.
On a lighter note, Tisha noted that so many viewers resonated with the Martin show because of its depiction of a young Black couple madly in love during the ’90s.
“I think people really resonated with the fact that [Martin and Gina] were two young people in love to young Black couples because all we really had was Claire and Cliff [from The Cosby Show],” she told the CBS Mornings hosts. “To see that, to see two young people trying to figure it out with friends, I think that’s what really made people really love the show and really embrace it.”
The 53-year-old added that being back on the Martin show set since it debuted 30 years ago felt “incredible.” BET previously announced that they were releasing a reunion special starring the sitcom’s original cast members on its streaming platform, BET+. The network dropped
an official trailer for the show on June 6.“It was incredible. It was like we were gonna start work all over, like, right then. We were ready to start,” Tisha said in the interview. “It was amazing, like being with everybody. We were finishing each other’s sentences. We were joking, and we were laughing. It was like being on set again.”
The Martin reunion is scheduled to air via BET+ on June 16.
