Rapper Rod Wave is giving back to his community with an Easter giveaway for children on Saturday.
The event will be held from 1-6 p.m. at the Lakewood Junior Spartan Complex in St. Petersburg, Florida. Wave will be giving out bikes, food, and Easter baskets for children for the upcoming Easter holiday.
According to the Weekly Challenger, Wave’s grandmother Deloris Green-Foster said her grandson wanted to give back to the community that supported him for so many years.
“He just wants to say thank you to the community that supports him,” she said. “I am so proud of him. His dad gave him his first microphone, and that was it.”
The Florida native is known for wanting to help community members during their time of need. Additionally, Foster said she understands why he tries to help as many people as possible.
On April 9, the 22-year-old gave away $25,000 worth of gas at the Sunoco gas station in the Skyway Marina District. Hundreds of people showed, waiting hours for up to $50 worth of gas.
Foster told the news outlet that when she found out that Wave wanted a music career, she was concerned about his finances and how he would support himself.
“He was just about to graduate from high school, and I wanted him to get a job,” she said. “But he believed in his dream.”
While attending Lakewood High School, Wave started recording music with one of his friends and shared it on the internet.
“He was a student at Lakewood High School making his songs, and his friend put them on YouTube,” Foster said. “People liked it, and he started selling his CDs for $3, and people would buy them. This is his way of saying thank you.”
Since then, Wave has become a local celebrity and made a name for himself in the Hip Hop industry.
He started gaining recognition in 2019 with his single, “Heart on Ice,” which went viral on TikTok and YouTube and peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut album “Ghetto Gospel” peaked at number 10 on the US Billboard 200. Wave’s second album, “Pray 4 Love,” was released in 2020 and peaked at number two, and his third album, “Soulfly,” was released last year and debuted at number one.
