The Kid Mero is getting candid about his split with Desus.
As previously reported, on July 21, PUCK reported that the Bodega Boys’ manager Victor Lopez was banned from the Desus & Mero set and meetings at the Showtime network because he allegedly bullied and abused staff members on set. Desus Nice allegedly supported Lopez’s ban and the drama that ensued set the internet ablaze.
After the show’s last episode on June 23, Sis2Sis reported that Mero fired shots on the internet, letting fans know their run was done on July 12, and many people believe it was due to their relationship with the manager, Lopez.
Now, The Kid Mero, whose real name is Joel Martinez, is taking his turn to clear up some things about the split.
In a recent interview on the Basic! Podcast Mero said, “That conversation solidified us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to operate independent of one another. As far back as June of last year, we were both pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals.”
Mero and Desus agreed to move on to their creative projects “in a way that was supportive of each other.”
“It wasn’t like I’m breaking up with my girlfriend on the phone, yo,” he
continued. “You know what I mean? It was a strategy, and it was one that we all agreed on. At the end of the day, things wind up and wind down, and when things are winding down, you got to recognize that they are winding down and not supermax Patrick Ewing when he has two toddler mattresses around his knees, and you know his career is coming to a close.”
Desus and Mero, a.k.a. the Bodega Boys’ talk show, started as a Complex podcast in 2013 before premiering in October 2016 on Viceland and later moving to Showtime in 2019.
Desus has not spoken publicly in an interview about the split. However, he tweeted on July 19, “Shouts to Showtime & shouts to the hive, thanks for being part of the journey. Proud of the show my staff made every episode. Big tings soon come.”
