The Bodyguard is Getting a Remake for No Reason and Fans Aren’t Feeling It

The Bodyguard, the iconic 1992 film starring Kevin Costner and the late Whitney Houston, is getting a remake no one asked for.

Playwright Matthew López was hired

by Warner Bros to write the script, according to Variety. Lopez is a Tony-award nominated writer known for his work on The Inheritance. Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote and produced the original movie, will involved in the remake’s production.

The upcoming film has huge shoes to fill. The 1992 version of The Bodyguard raked over $400 million in the box office. The movie’s soundtrack is the best selling of all time thanks to several bops from Houston including “I Will Always Love You.”

The Bodyguard received two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song for “I Have Nothing” and “Run to You,” as reported by Complex. The soundtrack earned three Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Female.

The film has been in the works since 2011 but no cast members have been announced. The scant details didn’t stop fans from weighing in.

Some folks offered suggestions to replace Costner and Houston.

“If they are going to remake the Bodyguard, just go ahead and cast Amber Riley as the singer,” one person wrote. Other suggestions included Tessa Thompson and Tom Hiddleson and Ariana Grande paired with Chris Hemsworth.

While others aren’t looking forward to the remake at all.

“This is such a horrible idea. There is no need for a remake of the legendary movie, The Bodyguard. Hollywood refusing to invest in new talent and create new stories is pure laziness at this point,” one person argued.

“Why? There are so many writers and content creators out there with original ideas that need to be funded and seen. We don’t need to recreate things like The Bodyguard that had cultural impact and people will watch over and over. (yes this movie had cultural impact fight me) LOL,” wrote another person.

The Bodyguard remake’s release date has not been announced.
