Teyana Taylor Takes On The Role as Dionne Warwick in New Series

Actress and singer Teyana Taylor has been cast as Dionne Warwick by the iconic singer herself for a new upcoming series that could air on Netflix.

Warwick shared with Entertainment Weekly that a series based on her life is “in the works” and that Taylor could be heading the project– both starring and directing.

In an interview with People Magazine, Taylor said, “It was a fight to be able to have this opportunity and to play a role of someone that I look up to, and you love, such an iconic person. To me, it’s a feeling I almost can’t explain. I’ve done a lot of movies and TV shows, but I still feel like I never really got the chance for people to really see me act.”

“And I never got a chance to be in a serious film, where I literally have to bring somebody else’s story to life,” she continued. “So, that in itself is a whole ‘nother level of pressure. But one thing about me is, any role that I’m playing, I go full in. I don’t half-a** anything.”

One thing is clear, Taylor means business, and this role is the first step in leveling up her career.

Warwick first showed interest in having a series made about her life on Twitter in a video she made. She asked people if they’d watch and they’d like to see portray her.  She later commented that she’d want Taylor to portray her and tagged Netflix on the tweet.

“It’s going to be a series. We’re planning to do an episodic type of a show,” Warwick told EW.

“[Teyana] is certainly a talented young lady with whom I’ve had the pleasure of interfacing. In fact, we had a conversation last night on the telephone. She’s very excited about the prospect of being involved, and she’s also going to be very, very much involved in directing it and putting together parts and parcel of how we see this going.”

Taylor is going to be rocking several roles with this one.

On the topic of Netflix producing the show, Warwick said,

“Netflix is one of the places I’ve been looking at possibly doing it,” she explains. “They’re not the only place that we’re looking at, but Netflix seems to be the leading episodic [platform] to do something similar to what I want to do. There’s a lot of very exciting stuff going on right now!”
