Text messages between the controversial R&B singer R. Kelly’s ex-girlfriend, Azriel Clary, and her mother, Alice Clary, surfaced, showing Alice encouraging Azriel to “entice” the singer at 17.

The Neighborhood posted screenshots of court documents and text messages regarding Azriel’s relationship with the singer. Azriel is referred to as “Jane Doe” in the court documents.

R. Kelly’s legal team used the messages to refute Azriel’s 2020 claims and substantiate that Alice apprized Azriel of tactics to inveigle the “Step In the Name of Love” hitmaker.

“…the record shows that Jane’s mother purposefully and strategically enticed Defendant with her 17-year-old daughter, comparing her to Aaliyah at various points,” the document read.

The messages were released three years after Azriel alleged that R. Kelly forced her to engage in group sex, would beat her and other women in the house if they didn’t please him sexually, controlled who she communicated with and more.

She recalled him beating her with a size 12 shoe for what felt like hours and ordered one of his other girlfriends to clean her up in the bathtub while he watched, according to her interview with The Sun.

According to the documents, the “coercion” began eight years ago (April 2023) when Azriel attended one of R. Kelly’s concerts in Orlando, Florida. She obtained the singer’s number from an unknown source and was notified that R. Kelly wanted a hotel for them to spend time together without managers and security. R. Kelly was allegedly under the impression Azriel was 18. 

Alice remitted specific instructions for Azriel to follow while in the “Trapped in the Closet” singer’s presence.

“Be prepared to sing 3 songs. He said he will meet you and listen to your song,” Alice texted. “Please have your glasses of hair to side…’Mamma Knows Best’ (Jessie J), ‘Pretty Hurts’ (Beyoncé) and third your choice, don’t yell.”

She then instructed Azriel to “put on a show” and “entice” during her private performance by gabbing his hand, wiggling and sitting on his lap. 

“…this your chance and opportunity don’t blow it,” Alice continued in her message.

She emphasized that R. Kelly didn’t like when young girls tried to appear older and warned her not to seem “grown.”

“Take off that ugly a** lipstick. I told you he don’t want you to be grown,” the messages read. “I told you to keep hair curly that s**t look a mess. You need some jeans or shorts, you trying to look grown. He wanted you [because] you look young and innocent that’s what he want, not a lil girl trying to be grown. You’re a d**n fool.”

The court document stated that when “Jane” arrived at the hotel, she allegedly disregarded her mother’s instructions to tease the singer and began stripping until she was standing in her undergarments. That night, the two reportedly engaged in sexual intercourse.

The next day, police arrived at the hotel room because Alice had called them. R. Kelly asked if she was 18, and Azriel repeatedly confirmed she was, even after he told her not to lie. Police ID’d Azriel and then left, leading the two to have sex again.

Messages showed Alice reminded Azriel of her purpose for associating with the star, prodding her to get him to notice her musical talents.

“You need to let him hear your songs,” Alice texted. “Let him see your video. You trying to date the man you need to let him see your s**t.”

She even told her to be more like R. Kelly’s former lover, Aaliyah.

“He married (sic) Aliyah cuz she was feisty; she didn’t let him run over her. You need to be different than the rest.'”

At one point, Alice cautioned Azriel to confess her true age to the singer.

“You need to let him know your age cuz he in public doing stuff cuz he thin you of age, so he don’t care but when it come out that [you’re] not and you didn’t tell him, he gonna look stupid and will be really mad cuz you will make him look like an idiot,” Alice texted. “…he may not mind your age but that need to be his decision don’t assume. He may be hurt and decieved and very upset. You have him lying to people, that’s not cool.”

Alice advised that R. Kelly wouldn’t take her music career seriously if she kept messing around with him instead of exhibiting her talent.

“You are silly. That man ain’t trying to do nothing with you musically, he want to f**k period cuz he like young girls,” Alice admonished.

Other messages showed Alice encouraging their relationship because the singer was spending thousands on her daughter, hoping the two were “forever.”

“You better stop taking s**t for granted,” Alice texted. “That man just spent $20k or better on you…ain’t get no coochie, and then you not at his show…that’s disrespectful, a slap in the face…you better do some crocodile tears.”

A Chicago jury found the ’90s music icon guilty of three counts of producing child pornography and three counts of enticing minors to engage in sexual activity. The court sentenced him to 30 years in prison.
