The elders used to say that when you dig a hole for someone, you better dig two. Christine Davitt, Senior Social Media Manager at Teen Vogue, learned that lesson in real time this week, Newsweek reported. Davitt released a letter complaining that the prospective editor-in-chief, Alexi McCammonds, should be terminated from the position due to tweets she made when she was a teen that made mean comments about Asians. 

Although McCammond, a Black woman, apologized and deleted the tweets in 2019, Teen Vogue staffers pressed the issue. On March 18, McCammond issued a statement saying she resigned from the coveted position– before she even began. Until that time, organizational leaders at Teen Vogue were supportive of McCammond.

Oh, but what a tangled web she wove when she tried to be woke, was a hater, and didn’t know how to mind the business that paid her. 

Davitt’s own tweets from 2009 surfaced, and apparently, “the n-word” makes her teeth white (old Paul Mooney joke). Tariq Nasheed tweeted a screenshot of Davitt’s tweets in which she called a friend of hers “n****” on two occasions. In 2010, Davitt tweeted, “I love the contradictory nature of the phrase ‘white n****.'” 

Let the record show, McCammonds never used any of the slurs commonly associated with Asians. She described people as Asian as a part of her tweets. 

Of course, Davitt has since set her Twitter account to private because she can talk smack but doesn’t have (electronic) hands. Davitt is half-Irish and half-Filipino. On her Instagram, she describes herself as a “queer fat filipinx femme in brooklyn [sic].” 

There is now a call for Davitt to either resign or be fired. Considering that most of Black History Month and all of this month so far has been focused on Black people being scolded for not advocating for the Asian community, we can be certain that Davitt will become the most Asian she’s ever been in her life when she re-emerges.

Unlike those who can more easily assimilate into whiteness, Christine forgot that not only does the internet never forget, Black folks, don’t either. 

It takes more than a septum ring and Kool-Aid-colored hair to be “woke.” Just like it’s safe to assume that Christine wants us to be gentle with her because she wasn’t as enlightened and probably basking in her whiteness back in 2009– when she had a penchant for using “the n-word.”

Maybe, she should have thought about that before she came for McCammond for things she said when she was a teenager. 

The most poetic part about this is that McCammond’s future is bright because she handled hers like an adult.

Teen Vogue should re-offer her the editor-in-chief role. Davitt ran and is still on the e-lam. Who’s going to hire her after that? 

It should be noted that Teen Vogue senior staffers Michelle Li and Lucy Diavolo also locked down their Twitter accounts, according to Fox News. 

Davitt is proof that many of the “woke” need to take another melatonin and go back to bed.
