When some people find the love of their life, they are ready to lock them down immediately. Others, like R&B singer Tank, may need more time. For years, the crooner and his now wife of two years, Zena Foster, were unofficially committed to each other for over half a decade, even having a child together. The couple was finally ready to share their complicated love story with fans and sat down with OWN’s Black Love on June 4 to spill some tea on their boomerang relationship.

Tank was open about his initial fear of commitment. His fear of messing up a relationship he knew was meant to play an important role in his life resulted in him self-sabotaging and running from Zena.
“I was apprehensive,” said Tank, “I think I was more scared than anything because I truly felt like she was the one and I really didn’t want to mess it up. That was my whole reservation. I just need some time. I’ll know when I know. Being able to look at it in hindsight, I can see where I was just scared, scared to mess it up and not knowing if I was in a place where I wouldn’t.”
Their imperfect love also included a period when they took a six-year break from the relationship. During that time, they were committed to co-parenting their child. For the entertainer, that time was necessary for him to come to terms with his feelings for Zena.
“I woke up one morning, and I was like ‘I think I’m in love with her again.’”

“I don’t think you ever stopped,” responded his wife.
While Tank was figuring out his emotional baggage, Zena displayed the patience of a saint. When Tank was ready to commit officially, his better half was clear with her expectations.
“I did know if we ever got back together, it was going to be forever,” said Zena. “It wasn’t like we were going to date. We already been through the stuff. We either going to make it or we not.”
