SWV Biopic Picked Up By Lifetime, Sources Say They’re ‘Working On The Script’

A biopic of Grammy Award-nominated 90s R&B group SWV has reportedly been picked up by popular cable channel, Lifetime.

According to reports, a source said the group has already been “working on the script.”

Initial news of the project arose in 2017 when SWV’s lead singer, Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, revealed they were “in talks” for a biopic.

“We’re actually in talks [for] an SWV biopic, so stay tuned… There’s so much that people don’t know,” she reportedly said.

Her fellow group member, Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, added that there was an interest from fans in the movie.

“Everyone’s interested,” she said.

Two years later, in 2019, Gamble shared an image of herself and singer Amber “Sevyn” Streeter side-by-side, saying the 35-year-old should play her in a biopic.

“Me & my baby @sevyn … She has to play me in the SWV biopic! She looks so much like me,” she wrote via Instagram on Nov. 10, 2019.

However, it has not been confirmed whether or not the Florida native is actually set to portray the iconic singer.

SWV, short for “Sisters With Voices” and consisting of Gamble, Lyons, and Tamara “Taj” George, made its debut with the 1992 album It’s About Time. The album spawned a string of hit singles, including “I’m So Into You,” “Right Here,” “Downtown,” “Weak,” and “You’re Always On My Mind.” They became a mainstream force by 1993 and even released a remix version of “Right Here,” sampling pop icon Michael Jackson’s 1982 hit “Human Nature.”

It’s About Time was so successful that it earned 11 Billboard Music Award nominations.

The New York-based group then released a second album in 1996, titled New Beginning

, and the third one in 1997, titled Release Some Tension.

In 1998, SWV disbanded but reunited in 2005 and have performed together again ever since. They also had a WeTV reality show called SWV: Reunitedwhich aired from 2014 to 2015.

In 2021, the trio went toe-to-toe against fellow ’90s RNB group Xscape for the virtual music battle series, Verzuz.
