Legendary musicians Slick Rick, The Supremes and Nile Rogers are set to receive Lifetime Achievement Grammy Awards.
On Jan. 5, The Recording Academy announced that the three acts would receive their Special Merit Awards at the 2023 ceremony in February.
“The Academy is proud to celebrate this diverse slate of influential music people spanning numerous genres and crafts as our 2023 Special Merit Awards honorees,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. “Each creator [including Slick Rick, The Supremes and Nile Rogers] on this list has made an impact on our industry — from technical to creative achievements — representing the breadth of music’s diverse community. We’re excited to celebrate this group of legends next month that continues to inspire and shape the music world.”
The Special Merit Award is reportedly presented by vote of the “Recording Academy’s National Trustees to performers” who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording; ^through 1972, recipients included non-performers.” The honorees will receive their awards at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 4–the day before the 65th Grammy Awards ceremony which will air on TV on Feb. 5.
The Recording Academy will also hand out posthumous Lifetime Achievement Awards to blues pioneer Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, and Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson of The Supremes.
On Dec. 18, Sis2Sis reported that famed singer and songwriter, H.E.R, who also owns a few Grammy Awards, is one step closer to EGOT status. The singer snagged a 2022 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B performance for the song, “Fight For You” amongst the 5 she already owns as well as 21 nominations.
“There’s absolutely going to be an EGOT in my future, hopefully,” she told People after winning Best Song at the Oscars in 2021. At the time, the singer added that she’s “also super passionate about acting as well, so you may see me up here as an actress also, and then I love musicals. Me and Brandy have been talking a lot and she’s inspired me, since she did a musical.”
