Fans of Donald Glover’s cult comedy Atlanta can look forward to the show’s return after a three-year break.
The third and latest season is touted in a trailer just dropped that explains nothing about what to expect while teasing viewers with Sun Ra’s “It’s After the End of the World.”
Season 3 comes three years after Season 2’s finale, delayed in part by the pandemic when all television production halted and competing demands with Glover’s other projects.
According to IndieWire, the third and fourth seasons were written early in the pandemic, and production started in April. In a review for IndieWire, Ben Travers’ review of Season 2 states, “Brothers Donald and Stephen Glover, who penned the episodes, continue to find natural rhythms to convey the bigger picture,” Travers said in his review. “When Paper Boi drives home the theme of Episode 3 in one perfect comparison, it connects.”
The show is based on Glover’s early years in Atlanta and has been compared to Dave; another FX surprise hit that highlights the life of comic and rapper Dave Burd, better known by his stage name Lil Dicky. Glover has pushed back on comparisons of his series to Burd’s.
The new season is expected to air in early 2022. Season 3 is in post-production, while Season 4 is being filmed. FX chairman John Landgraf reported in August, “The reason I can’t lock down a date right now is that it’s being driven by Donald Glover and producer Hiro Murai’s schedule and availability,” he shared. “I think we’ll be able to lock down an actual date for Season 3 and maybe for both cycles within the next couple of months.”
Viewers will remain in suspense until FX announces the new dates.
