Saweetie explains in an interview the reason why she decided to shave her head and debut a brand new look.
The “Back to the Streets” rapper sat down with midday host Bryhana from Power 106 FM in Los Angeles and discussed her new record ‘Closer” with R&B singer H.E.R., the inspiration behind the visuals for the track, and why she decided to shave her head.
When asked if she was genuinely bald, the 28-year-old confirmed that she did shave all of her hair off as a “meditating” process.
The conversation starts at around 6:00.
“Meditation, as crazy as it sounds because I just found so much clarity within myself,” said Saweetie as she recently debuted a buzz cut. “I wanted to start over, and I did research about hair, and hair holds a lot of energy. And I really wanted to just feel new and fresh with this new music. I won’t say new me. But elevated me. I really just wanted to start over again.”
The Bay Area native described the newly “elevated Saweetie” by saying, “She meditates, she’s centered, she has clarity, she knows what she wants, she puts her foot down. I feel like before I discovered meditation, everything was, ‘Yes yes yes, I’ll do it,'” she said.
Saweetie, of Filipino descent, said the change was much needed after ignoring her body’s signals telling her to slow down. “I feel like before I discovered meditation, everything was “yes, yes, yes, I’ll do it,” no matter how bad my body felt, if the opportunity was great, I just said yes,” she explained. “I kept running down my mental, my spiritual, my physical. But how am I gonna continue to work if I’m depleted?”
She shared a photo of her new look on her Instagram account in December.
The rapper said one thing she wishes for “everyone” to do is to establish boundaries in their lives.
