Quinta Brunson, the actress and comedian known for her work on the hit show Abbott Elementary, took home her first Golden Globe.
During Tuesday’s 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony, Brunson won Best Actress in a Comedy Series. She is the first broadcast network actress to win in the category since Tracee Ellis Ross won in 2016 for ABC’s’ black-ish.
Brunson, a Philly native who plays the role of the lovable and quirky teacher Janine on the show, beat out a talented group of nominees, including Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant), Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), Jenna Ortega (Wednesday and Jean Smart (Hacks).
Brunson, 33, shared a touching acceptance speech saying, “Disney, 20th Century, Warner Bros, thank you… for believing in this show about a group of teachers from Philadelphia. It has resonated with the world in a way that I couldn’t even imagine it would have. But let’s be real, I did imagine it, so I sold it to you; thank you for believing in it.”
Brunson continued thanking her co-producers, “who are just incredible and just support my vision. It’s just worth everything to be able to have two people support you like that. They’re very white men, and they just be like, ‘Okay, Quinta!’ So they let me get away with a lot, and it really works out.”
“I love you guys so much, and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for having you,” Brunson concluded as she celebrated her co-stars. “I can’t believe I got to see one of my cast members win tonight, and I’m just so happy to be here with you all.”

The win is a major milestone for Brunson, who has been working in the entertainment industry for several years but is only now starting to receive mainstream recognition for her talents. Her win also furthers Abbott Elementary’s success as it won the award for Best TV Comedy series in the same ceremony. Brunson’s co-star, Tyler James Williams, also took home his first win earlier in the night for best-supporting TV actor.
Congratulations to all of the Golden Globe winners!
