Comedian and actress Quinta Brunson got her moment to give the rest of her Emmy speech on September 14 on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The 32-year-old Emmy Award winner interrupted Kimmel while monologuing in lighthearted payback for the situation that went down at the Emmys with an ill-timed comedic bit.
While Kimmel was talking and cracking jokes on air, Brunson walked out on stage with her golden Emmy award in her hands –interrupting the late-night show host while he was speaking.
In a nod to the incident, Brunson said, “I know, but I have a little favor to ask, actually. So you know how you win an Emmy, you only have 45 seconds to do an acceptance speech, which is not that much time? And then you get less time because someone does a dumb comedy bit that goes on a bit too long?”
Kimmel acknowledged it jokingly, sharing a laugh with the Abbott Elementary actress. She then asked the comedian to use the rest of his monologue time to finish her acceptance speech cut short at the Emmys.
Kimmel stepped to the back and gave Brunson the spotlight, dressed in a feathery pink dress with cross-bodice lattice sparkles.
She then took her time to thank her Abbott Elementary fans, the internet for “raising her,” other showrunners, and the show’s writers. She finished the speech with, “Now please go to bed; we have work tomorrow.”
After breaking the commercial, the two sat down to genuinely discuss what had happened. Kimmel apologized, “I do want to explain this for those who may be confused by this.”
He continued, “That was a dumb comedy bit that we thought would be funny. I lost, and then I drank too much, and I had to be dragged out on the stage. And then people got upset. They said that I stole your moment, and maybe I did. I’m very sorry if I did do that. I’m sorry I did do that, actually. And also, the last thing I would ever want to do is upset you because I think so much of you, and I think you know that. I hope you know that.”
Brunson thanked Kimmel for the apology and accepted it.
“I was honestly in such a moment of having a good time like I won my first Emmy! I was up there happy, and I was wrapped up at the moment.”
The aforementioned incident occurred on Monday, September 12, when Kimmel was in the middle of a distasteful bit where he lay on the floor ‘unconscious’ while Brunson tried to give her acceptance speech. Most audience members found it disrespectful to Brunson, saying that he took away what should have been her spotlight entirely.
