Prince’s Oldest Brother, Johnny Nelson, Passes Away

The family of music icon Prince has experienced another loss. John R. “Johnny” Nelson passed away on September 3. Nelson was Prince’s oldest half-brother.

The men’s sister, Sharon L. Nelson, made the announcement via Twitter on Friday.

It is with great sadness. We announce that our beloved brother, Johnny R. Nelson, received his Heavenly wings tonight at 7:47 PM.  Johnny’s loving personality and spirit shined brightly, and he fought hard to help preserve Prince’s legacy.

We will miss you, Johnny. Love Sharon.”

Nelson, born in 1944, was the son of Prince’s biological father, John L. Nelson. In total, the “Beautiful Ones” crooner had eight siblings. His four surviving siblings are Sharon, Omarr Baker, Norrine and Tyka.

Nelson and Prince’s siblings that preceded them in death include Lorna and Duane Nelson. A brother, Alfred Jackson, died in 2019.

The beloved musician died on April 27, 2016, from an opioid overdose. He was 57.

According to Fox News, the legal battle over Prince’s estate has culminated with a New York music firm Primary Wave. The organization now controls half of the “Purple Rain” singer’s estate after buying three heir’s shares. Baker and Jackson sold 100% of their inheritances to Primary Wave. His sister, Tyka, sold 90% of their shares.

The family was divided on the sale to Primary Wave.

“There’s not much anyone can do about family members who sell out for the dollar. That’s their right,” said the attorney, L. Londell McMillan, for the three siblings who still are holding on to their portion of the estate.

Our condolences to the family.
