It’s 2022, and some people think Blackface is still OK. After the “slap heard around the world,” A.K.A Will Smith unexpectedly slapping Oscar award host and comedian Chris Rock, a Peruvian show, decided to recreate the scene with a racist twist.
The show, El Wasap de JB, is a Peruvian comedy television program that imitates and parodies trending events, political figures, and celebrities.
Following the Oscar slap incident, photos from the parody of the slap scene circulated on social media, causing outrage as the show featured a Hispanic actor and actress dressed in Blackface with exaggerated features.
Twitter user @catrussy shared highlighted photos from the episode featured on Peruvian comedian Carlitos Vilchez’s Instagram page, which have since been deleted.
yeah and the latinos laughing it up in the comment section are the same ones who claim there’s no racism in latin america because everyone is “mixed” lol pic.twitter.com/1b636I0I6h

The user also shared photos of the actor and actress’s appearance without donning Blackface.

The tweets accuse the show of using Blackface and bring up other conversations surrounding some Hispanics, claiming racism is not a problem in Latin America.
Other users took to Twitter to share their criticisms.
My ex-father in law is Dominican & darker than my skin tone. He didn’t like me because I’m Black. Colorism is real.

It turns out that this is not the first time the show has used Blackface either. One user shared a photo from an episode that parodied the popular Disney film Encanto.

Another recalled a time when the show created a character mocking native Bolivians.
It comes from a local Peruvian tv show almost no one knows it existence outside Peru.
Don’t blame south Americans for its poor choices.
They also made a racist character named “Jacinta” to mock native bolivians and “Mama” to mock afro-american people. pic.twitter.com/h0pGGB6nXc

Peru, located in South America, has a population of roughly three million Blacks. Ironically, the country hasn’t counted its Black population since 1940.
