Peres Jepchirchir Wins New York City Marathon Months After Receiving Olympic Gold Medal, Making History

According to CNN, Peres Jepchirchir makes history as the first runner to take home an Olympic gold medal and win the annual marathon. Speaking with the news outlet about her strength and perseverance, she stated, “I thank my God for the energy he has given me,” adding, “I’m going to say this course is not bad, but it’s not easy.”

The Kenyan runner has undoubtedly made a name for herself over the past year. Only months after receiving a gold medal during the recent 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the 28-year-old athlete has secured another victory, this time winning the New York City Marathon women’s race on Sunday, Nov. 7.

Competing in the Olympics’ women’s marathon this past summer, Jepchirchir reportedly finished in 2 hours and 27 minutes, narrowly beating fellow Kenyan runner Brigid Kosgei. According to NPR, Kosgei previously broke

a world record for completing the 2019 Chicago Marathon in 2 hours and 14 seconds.

On her gold medal win, Jepchirchir commented in August, “It feels good. I’m so, so happy because we win as Kenya. First and second. I thank my god so much. I’m happy for my family. I’m happy for my country, Kenya.” Discussing the moment she knew she would come out a winner, Jepchirchir added, “I pushed on the pace (and when I opened the gap) it was like, ‘wow, I’m going to make it. I’m going to win’.”
