Niecy Nash sat with Jada Pinkett-Smith for Wednesday’s season premiere of “Red Table Talk” to discuss her marriage to “HERSband” Jessica Betts, and how it’s her first relationship with a woman.
A preview of Wednesday night’s episode has been released and reveals family reactions to the news Nash was marrying a woman, her take on coming out and when she knew she was in love with Betts and wanted to pursue a relationship.
In the video, Nash said her children didn’t know what it meant since they always knew her to be, “strictly d***ly” before meeting Betts in 2015. Initially, the two were friends and remained as such until 2019 when Nash divorced Jay Tucker and the two grew into something more. They had questions, she said.
“My daughters were like, ‘Wait what?’ My youngest daughter, she reminded me, she was like, ‘Wait a minute mom, are you the same mom that was like girl, I’m strictly d***ly?’ And I was like, ‘Wah, wah. Like yeah, but no.’ And my son was like, ‘Wooow.’”
Nash told Pinkett-Smith that she didn’t see her marriage to Betts as a coming out in the traditional sense because she “loves who she loves.” She explained as she did when she told PEOPLE Magazine in September, “I don’t feel like my marriage is my coming out of anywhere, but rather a going into myself and being honest about who I love. And I’m not limiting myself on what that love is supposed to look like.”
Seven months into the marriage, Nash says she knows Betts is the right person for her because she “edifies her soul.”
Betts will also take a seat at the table for the talk and share her feelings about Nash and becoming one of “the moms” to Niecy’s children.
“Red Table Talk” with the Betts and Nash premiered Wednesday, March 31 at 12 p.m. EST/9 a.m. PST.
