“The last five days before his passing was really beautiful,” NeNe said. “All of his children were there. His best friends were there. Our closest friends were there. We all sat with him around the clock.”
During the last moments of his life, his last words were to promise his wife that he would always be with her.
“I’m not going to leave you. God is going to bless you,” NeNe said he told her. He also told her to move on with her life.
Gregg, displaying the love and protection for his wife that fans had come to expect from his behavior on the show, had already written NeNe specific instructions on how to move on with her life with their sons without too much interruption.
“It was difficult,” said NeNe. “Gregg handled a lot of things in our life.”
Nene said Gregg sent her into his office, where he had prepared an envelope labeled “Open this if anything ever happens to me.”
In it was a letter to their son Brentt and information such as who NeNe needed to pay, the name of their accountant and other pertinent details.
Nene held Gregg’s hand during his final breath, a breath that, although expected, seemed to come much sooner than she expected.
“He took a deep breath, and then he stopped. I thought I would be scared, but I just held him and kissed him,” she said.
NeNe admitted that she is still coping with the grief of loss, sometimes forgetting that he is not just on a business trip and will return.
Gregg died on Sept. 1 at the age of 66 from colon cancer.
