Naomi Osaka Is Launching KINLÒ, A Skincare Brand Designed For “Melanated Skin Tones”

Professional tennis player and Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has continued to make strides in her sport at only 23-year-old. Now, the young athlete is proving that she’s isn’t confined to just one lane. Branching out into entrepreneurship, Osaka announced on her Instagram page Tuesday that she’s launching a skincare brand called KINLÒ. 

Described as “a new functional skincare brand developed by Naomi Osaka specifically for people with melanated skin tones,” KINLÒ will be a skincare line featuring

various products, including lip balm, body spray and a face lotion that comes in SPF 40 and SPF 50, offering sunscreen benefits.

Speaking on the launch of her new brand, Osaka wrote on Instagram, “I never thought I would ever start my own company, but I’m super excited to announce that I’ll be launching KINLÒ,”

The young boss also mentioned adding sunscreen products to her new line, writing “I hope these products can help a lot of people and potentially save lives because I really feel that we aren’t protecting ourselves as much as we could.”

Though skin cancer is less prevalent in the Black community, it’s an old myth that we don’t need any protection from the sun. Sunscreen allows people of all races to have protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays that emit the sun. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends products with an SPF of 30 or higher.

One fan brought up a concern about KINLÒ potentially containing skin-lightening products, writing under her post, “I hope this isn’t another lightning skin product low key.”

Osaka quickly shut it down, responding back “Not at all, these were made to embrace the melanin. [heart emoji].”

The new skincare line comes after Osaka’s numerous wins, including her success at February’s Australian Open. After defeating her idol, Serena Williams, in the semi-finals, the young athlete went on to win her fourth Grand Slam singles title.

She recently took a small break from tennis following the Miami Open that wrapped up in early April. “I felt like I needed it because after Australia I had, like, one day of rest. Then I immediately started working. It wasn’t tennis, but other stuff,” she said in a statement. “For me, I just felt like the hard-court swing, the Australian hard-court swing, plus Miami, was kind of compressed for me.” She’s now training for the Madrid Open, which begins April 30.

Osaka’s first business venture, KINLÒ, is set to launch this fall.
