Super producer Missy Elliott’s hometown paid homage by naming a street after her. Missy Elliot Boulevard will be located
between Airline Boulevard and Greenwood Drive in Portsmouth, Virginia.Erin Carter proposed to the Portsmouth City Council to change McLean Street to “Missy Elliott Blvd.” The city council unanimously approved the proposal Tuesday.
The purpose of the name change is to honor her and give the rapper her well-deserved recognition. The street name change also improves the City’s Entertainment District.
In response to her latest achievement, Missy Elliot took to Twitter to express her gratitude.
“I am so Humbly Grateful #757 VA 2 up 2 down,” she wrote. “I been through many ups & downs & times I wanted to give up but God’s plan was different! & all I can do is say thank you & Thank you to everyone on the City [Council]. I am so grateful for everything.”
Born Melissa Arnette Elliot, she came into the world on July 1, 1971, in Portsmouth. Upon graduating high school, Missy Elliot became a superstar, writing hits for artists like Jodeci, Aaliyah, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Monica, Mya, and more.
She also had some hits of her own like “Work It,” “Get Ur Freak On,” “Lose Control,” and more. Her talents have led her to earn 22 Grammy nominations and four wins. Now the singer can add having her street to her resume.
