Miguel and his wife, Nazanin Mandi, have announced their plans to divorce only two months before their third anniversary.
A representative spoke exclusively to People and issued a statement that sounds like the split is amicable.
“After 17 years together, Miguel and Nazanin Mandi have decided to separate and have been for some time now. The couple both wish each other well.”
The two were married in 2018 but had been a couple for several years before getting engaged in 2016.
In 2015, Miguel felt that he and Mandi’s relationship was solid when he fielded questions about the lengthy pairing.
He believed that Mandi learned to adjust to the fact that he had decided to go with his instincts about the trajectory of their long courtship.
While neither of the two has explained why divorce is the next step in their 17-year relationship, back in April, Miguel and Mandi spoke to the media about how lockdown had affected their marriage.
At the time, Miguel said that their relationship had never been stronger and that the change of the two of them being together more consistently was a challenge.
“The majority of our pre-marriage, my albums all happened before I got married, so that meant me not being here was normal…We dream different, and it might be because we’re more in sync and more in touch on a day-to-day level on how we calibrate, so we’re always encouraging and doing our best to just be supportive because it’s challenging,” he said.
Mandi’s statement to People about the same topic was arguably less generous as she noted that they had to work on “the spark” since the separation of travel was no longer there to engender excitement.
While it’s sad that the announcement has happened so close to another anniversary for the couple, in the words of Kenny Rodgers, it’s good to know when to fold ’em.
