Meghan McCain has claimed that she resigned from The View due to a toxic environment led by Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar.
Meghan was on the popular daytime show for four years, and in that time, she fared much better than her conservative predecessors, such as Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She was one of the few co-hosts on the show who resigned of her own volition, reported Variety.
In her new audio memoir “Bad Republican,” Meghan recounted two instances in particular where more liberal co-hosts made
her cry.According to the former co-host, she decided to leave the show the day she returned from maternity leave. She was already struggling with postpartum depression and was paranoid about someone hurting her or her daughter.
On that episode, she joked with Joy and asked if she had missed her. Joy, known for her candor, said, “I did not miss you. Zero!”
That made Meghan cry during the commercial break.
In another episode, Whoopi told her to stop talking. According to the interviewer, Meghan began to cry as she spoke about the incident.
Meghan claimed that the work environment at The View is toxic and rife with the sort of mean girl drama and backstabbing that stereotypes of which predominantly female workplaces are accused.
Interestingly, Meghan said that she liked Whoopi but felt that the EGOT actress and show moderator did not share the same feelings for her.
“I have a lot of love and affection for her,” she said. “It started with the ‘Girl, please stop talking!’ incident. I remember when it happened, almost crying on the show. I never wanted to upset her.”
Meghan admitted that Whoopi did apologize to her the following day for the incident. However, Joy did not apologize for her comments about not missing Meghan despite her request for an apology.
In the end, she filed human resources complaints. She attempted to speak with various executive producers about what she felt was disparate treatment, but she was never able to come to terms.
Arguably, between the stress of her father, Sen. John McCain, dying of cancer, postpartum depression and a pandemic, perhaps Meghan was simply no longer equipped to handle such strong personalities.
