In an interview with The Cut, Meghan Markle talked about the difficulties she has faced with British tabloids and their racist reporting tactics, specifically them calling her children the n-word.
In a sit-down with Allison Davis, Markle talked about how she was forced to hand over control of personal aspects of her life, including social media, passports, mail, etc. Although it was hard for her to give up sharing part of her life with her Instagram followers, she did it out of her love for her husband, Prince Harry.
When she was permitted to join the other royals on a preexisting Kensington Royal account, which no longer exists, she learned that she could only post photos of her children on the platform if she sent them first to the Royal Rota, a U.K. media pool. Markle didn’t feel comfortable since she’s had bad luck with British media outlets.
“Why would I give the very people that are calling my children the N-word a photo of my child before I can share it with the people that love my child,” she asked. “You tell me how that makes sense, and then I’ll play that game.”
The Daily Mail has been accused of biased reporting on the former Suits actress. In November 2015, the outlet tiled one article, “Harry’s girl is (almost) straight outta Compton: Gang-scarred home of her mother revealed-so will he be dropping by for tea?”
Another report read, “Meet the family! How Harry’s American girl’s ancestors were a tailor, a teacher and a cleaner in racially-divided Jim Crow South-while his were ruling the British Empire.”
In contrast to Markle, there’s a noticeable difference in how U.K. media outlets report news about Kate Middleton. When Middleton was pregnant, a report came out about her touching her belly.
The title read, “Not long to go! Pregnant Kate tenderly cradles her baby bump while wrapping up her royal duties ahead of maternity leave-and. William confirms she’s due any minute now.”
An article about the same thing was written but about Markle.
The title read, “Why can’t Meghan Markle keep her hands off her bump? Experts tackle the question that has got the nation talking: Is it pride, vanity, acting-or a new age bonding technique?”
Markle talked about how the tabloids attacked her and Harry about renovating their home with “an exorbitant amount of taxpayer funds,” which they were given.
Knowing the amount of pressure she would go through (including in tabloids), Tyler Perry reached out to Markle to inform her he was in his prayers and offered one of his private homes in Beverly Hills for her and Prince Harry to escape to, despite the two never meeting.
