Mary J. Blige recently appeared on E! ’s Daily Pop, where she talked about why she doesn’t have children, the new album, and performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
“I have nieces and nephews forever, and I’m always watching how people are scrambling for babysitters,” Blige, 51, said. “I don’t want to go through that. I like my freedom to go and move and do what I want to do. I don’t want to have to tend to someone all the time.”
Blige is having a successful year thus far since releasing her new album “Good Morning Gorgeous,” which topped the Billboard charts last month at #14. When asked what inspired her to come up with the title, the singer explained that she was in a “horrible place” at the time and found strength by speaking positive affirmations to herself.
“The title came from some real, heavy, trying to dig myself out of some terrible, horrible place. I started speaking, “good morning gorgeous, good morning beautiful — good morning sexy” whatever it is that I wanted to be,” Blige said. “And that’s the place that started to help me grow and have the power to actually move away from that negative situation.”
Aside from the album and hot new single, the 51-year-old crooner starred in a Super Bowl commercial with Hologic and performed alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and 50 Cent during the Super Bowl LVI Halftime show. Though this wasn’t the first time Blige performed at the sporting event, she took the stage as a background singer with Brittney Spears, Aerosmith, and other artists in 2002 at the XXXVI Super Bowl in New Orleans.
Most recently, the New York native partnered with Lifetime to produce a romantic drama with her production company Blue Butterfly. Real Love, written by Sonja Warfield and Rachel Ingram, was inspired by Blige’s hit song released in 1992.
“I wrote ‘Real Love’ based on my real-life experiences and my fans connected to it in a deeply personal way.” It’s exciting to now use this song and my music to create a new story by way of film, continuing to build on a pillar of the foundation of my production company, Blue Butterfly. My passions for acting and music now include developing diverse stories with music as the backdrop. I am grateful to Lifetime for their partnership in the story of Real Love,” Blige said during a press release earlier this month.
A release date has yet to be announced.
