A potential Verzuz with Mariah Carey and Beyoncé would be one for the books. However, the five-octave-ranged queen refused to entertain the controversial topic.
During an appearance on E! News ‘with Rebecca Ray, the singer talked about her Christmas collaboration with McDonald’s and the Verzuz that has been trending on social media since legendary music executive L.A. Reid suggested the duo a little over a week ago, VIBE reported.
“We can’t ask that question. First of all, I love Beyoncé and I admire her so much as a performer for what she’s done for the world and everything else. So I ain’t answering that question because how am I supposed to—I’ll be disrespecting myself, and I’m not gonna do that.”
While officially shutting down Verzuz discussions, the “Honey” singer transitioned into a Christmas melody regarding her favorite time of the year.
Though Beyoncé hasn’t commented on the event, and she likely never will, fans can relive past memorable Verzuz matchups like Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, Brandy and Monica, Gladys Knight, and Patti LaBelle, and the most recent matchup, Stephanie Mills and Chaka Khan.
The Verzuz matchup started trending on social media after legendary music executive L.A. Reid mentioned the two superstars during his recent appearance on the daytime television show The Real.
“It’s Mariah Carey versus Beyoncé! Bring that on,” Reid said confidently. “The hits they have, the legacies they have. Bey is the queen, right? Sometimes Mariah might be slightly underrated for how long her career has lasted, how many hits she has, and she practically owns Christmas.”
The hypothetical battle sparked discussions on Twitter, and fans have voiced their opinions on who would win, whether the matchup would be a good one since both singers come from two different generations, and that neither one of them would ever agree to be a part of the event.

….Mariah Carey had her first hit when Beyonce was 8 years old, don’t forget. https://t.co/Uuyh5eZ1WO

Just because Mariah Carey has remained relevant, releasing hits in the 00s & 10s, does not mean she is peers with artists who debuted as solo artists after her. Same with Beyoncé, just because she has surpassed her peers from the 2000s does not mean she is peers w/ older artists.

I don’t think Mariah or Beyoncé would even participate in a versus. So the argument could stop there 🥴

Verzuz can’t afford Mariah Carey or Beyoncé. Let’s actually start there.

I told my family I would take Mariah's prime over Beyonce's at thanksgiving once and I haven't known peace since https://t.co/UiqnShgSny
