Louis Vuitton’s First Black Creative Director, Virgil Abloh, Dies At Age 41

Virgil Abloh has passed away at age 41. 

The acclaimed artistic director for Louis Vuitton Men died Sunday from a lengthy battle with cancer. He was the first Black creative director for the luxury brand. The news of his passing was shared via Abloh’s verified Instagram account.

We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues.”

“For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma,” the account posted. “He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.”

“Through it, all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered. Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design. He often said, ‘Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself,’ believing deeply in the power of art to inspire future generations.”

“We thank you all for your love and support, and we ask for privacy as we grieve and celebrate Virgil’s life.”

 

News of Abloh’s death spread quickly over social media. Fans of his work and celebrities expressed their condolences.

 

Abloh was born to Ghanaian parents in Rockford, Illinois. The innovative creator was also the founder of Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh™ in 2012. His eye for design and fashion caught the eye of the luxury conglomerate, where he was among the finalists of the LVMH Prize in 2015.

On Sunday, Kanye West dedicated his Sunday Service to Abloh.

The two men were close friends who met in the early 2000s, according to Revolt. As creatives, West and Abloh partnered on various projects including, album covers for “Yeezus” and “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Family.”

The creative director of Louis Vuitton Men’s brought his artistic vision to Yeezy’s latest project, “Donda.​​”
