Newly single Lori Harvey appeared as a guest on Wednesday’s episode of the Luv2SeeIt YouTube Series by the Bumble dating app and did an interview with Teyana Taylor about her approach to dating, from putting her needs first to learning from the past.
“I almost got married very young,” Harvey said to Taylor and Pietrina, a Bumble user. “I think after that…I felt like I hadn’t really experienced anything, I didn’t really know myself, I didn’t really know what I liked, what I didn’t like. I just feel like I hadn’t really experienced life. So, I think at that point then I was like, okay, I’m about to, like I said,’ just date on my terms…however I want to move, whatever I want to do, I’m gonna do it, and if it’s no longer serving me, I’m gonna move on.”
Harvey’s past relationships have been in the limelight for a while like her engagement to Dutch soccer player Memphis Depay in 2017 and, most recently, her split from actor Michael B. Jordan. Harvey stated during the interview with Taylor that she learned a lot from those relationships. One thing she learned and looked for in partners was open communication and transparency.
“Not trying to beat around the bush or act like you want something that you maybe really don’t,” she said to Taylor. “Just be open and honest about what it is, what you’re doing because then I feel like that gives you an opportunity to make a conscious decision about what you want to do.”
When Taylor asked what made her feel powerful when in a relationship, Harvey said that it was when she didn’t compromise her values and standards.
“There’s some superficial requirements. You can compromise with some of those. If it’s somebody who’s genuinely like a really good person, they care about you, they have your best interests at heart, then I feel like, okay, we can compromise on some of those things. But I think as long as you’re not compromising on your core values and beliefs.”
Harvey said that she believed the key to being happy in and out of a relationship is to “maintain your power” and not “give your power away to anybody.”
The young model and skincare mogul also talked about how dating at a young age is hard for people because it collides with the stage of trying to establish self-identity.
“I think because I was young, I was still trying to figure out who I was and what do I like and what don’t I like, but you also have this personal ear, and they’re kind of like influencing things,” the 25-year-old explained. “So, you kind of get confused like, ‘okay, well, do I really like this or do I like it because you like it?'”
The entire interview focused on Harvey’s growth and maturity to take the time to focus on her wants and needs. Ironically, when she was with Jordan, a source close to the two said that Jordan matured in their relationship, leading him to want to progress and settle down while Harvey wasn’t ready to settle.
