Grammy and NAACP Image Award-winning rapper and singer Lizzo landed
an HBO Max documentary set to debut this fall.Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, announced the documentary at the 2022 Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront at New York’s Carnegie Hall on May 18.
There, Jefferson reportedly unveiled the film’s first teaser.
“Growing up, I never dreamed I’d get to experience all of the things I’ve accomplished in my life, and I’m just getting started,” she said in a recent statement. “I’m so excited I get to share and relive my journey with my fans and HBO Max. From ‘Cuz I Love You’ to my dramatic world tour, losing and gaining love, and creating my new album’ Special,’ y’all get to see the amount of time, patience, blood, sweat, and tears that went into this process. It takes ten years to become an ‘overnight success,’ and hopefully, I can inspire other young creatives to keep going.”
The head of original content at HBO Max, Sarah Aubrey, added that the platform’s team has “admired” and “adored” the 34-year-old for quite some time.
“To get the chance to work with someone we have admired and adored for so long is a dream come true,” Aubrey said. “Lizzo’s formidable talent has entertained and inspired millions, and we are ecstatic to help share her incredible journey.”
The documentary will follow the “About Damn Time” musician from her beginnings in Detroit, Michigan and Houston, Texas, to her successful career as a recording artist and songwriter.
As of late, she has been promoting her shapewear brand, Yitty, and gearing up to go on tour starting this coming September.
In April, Live Nation announced her tour, titled “The Special Tour,” and revealed its guest headliner–Georgia-based rapper Latto.
“Shout out to Lizzo for giving me this opportunity,” Latto, whose real name is Alyssa Michelle Stephens, said about Jefferson during an interview on the 2022 Billboard Music Awards Red Carpet. “I was so geeked like, ‘Lizzo knows who I am? What?!’ So yeah, I think we’re [going to] have a lot of fun. She’s just a ball of energy. She’s the real ‘Big Energy.'”
