Lauren London admits she worried about her chemistry with Jonah Hill while they acted as lead costars in Netflix’s hit movie You People.
According to a February 1 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she expressed concern about connecting with Hill on screen. Still, she was settled by the fact that the film’s message resonated with her.
She began in the interview, “Why would these two people really like each other? They’re from two totally different worlds, and if you see them, you would never think that they would meet or hang out, whatever the case is. It was a conversation on connecting with people genuinely and going for the soul connection.”
London admitted that, surprisingly, she and Hill had a lot in common with one another, despite how different they were.
“I’m a Black woman; he’s a white man. We actually have a lot in common in our lives — some of our experiences and some of the ways we look at life and some of the ways we’ve taken life in,” She said that both Hill and she were from Los Angeles, “And also, growing up in L.A., though we grew up in different areas… We’re both L.A. kids from the same era.”
London continued to explain that the main couple in You People resounded with her own family’s identity.
“I just grew up with my mother in my household. I didn’t grow up with my dad living with us. My parents divorced when I was really young. I was three, so my experience is of my mother’s experience because I just grew up with a single black mom.”
The 38-year-old actress also pointed out that her father was Jewish and that she learned much more about that part of her culture while filming.
“What felt personal was shooting in L.A. and some of those areas that we shot in. I liked that they were Jewish ’cause it was also some stuff that I got to learn via being in the movie that I didn’t know.”
You People was released on Netflix on January 27, starring Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Nia Long, and Eddie Murphy and directed by Kenya Barris.
