On May 8, Verzuz announced the battle that had Gen-Xers losing their minds. 90s girl groups Xscape and SWV will battle it out on the “Verzuz” stage for the first time.
Kandi Burruss, a member of Xscape, first dropped a hint that the two groups may duke it out back in December. Since members of both groups have been dropping little jewels here and there, like a mini-battle between SWV’s Coko and Scott (below) featured on YouTube, word has it that Xscape has also been meeting regularly to select their playlist for the battle and are ready to see what SWV will bring to the table.
Xscape and SWV have been top fan picks for a “Verzuz” battle due to their stream of R&B hits in the 90s. Xscape was known for hits such as “Just Kickin’ It,” “Understanding,” “The Softest Place On Earth,” and “Who Can I Run To,” and SWV for “Right Here (Human Nature),” “Can We,” “Weak,” and ” You’re The One.”
The “Verzuz” battles gained popularity during quarantine when music fans could no longer see their favorites in concert. Music producers Timbaland and Swizz Beats took a hip-hop style where DJs go to battle and invited music artists to do the same with their music catalogs as fans watch on social media. To date, there have been matchups between Brandy and Monica, Gladys Knight and Patti Labelle, Jagged Edge and 112, Fabolous and Jadakiss, 2 Chainz and Rick Ross, and of course the unforgettable showdown between Babyface and Teddy Riley.
As revelers of olds school jams get their french rolls and pump waves ready, social media weighed in on the matchup.
