News of Prince’s never-heard-before 2010 album, “Welcome 2 America” being released this summer made Twitter’s trending topics Thursday as fans reacted to the announcement from the artist’s estate on social media.
Prince’s enigmatic and prescient statement album #Welcome2America will be released July 30, 2021, by The Prince Estate and @SonyLegacyRecs. The Deluxe Edition includes the previously unreleased studio album and a full 2011 Prince concert at @TheForum on Blu-ray. pic.twitter.com/Zrxr51bqfL

The album comes five years after Prince’s death and includes original songs and covers of songs made famous by Bob Dylan, Janet Jackson, Kool & the Gang and more. The Deluxe Edition contains the complete album from Prince’s famous vault and comes on both CD and black vinyl along with a previously unreleased concert video of Princeβs April 28, 2011 show at The Forum. However, none of the songs from the album were performed.Β A 32-page booklet will also be included.
Songs from the album will be heard in public for the first time on Sunday’s airing of 60 Minutes on CBS.
60 Minutes news correspondent Jon Wertheim went to Prince’s Paisley Park complex and spoke with Morris Hayes, who was Prince’s keyboardist at the time of the “Welcome 2 America” recording sessions. Hayes recalled asking Prince when the album would be released.
“And I remember asking him about it. And he says, ‘Well, we’ll just have to revisit that down the line.’ Because he was like onto the next project,” Hayes told Wertheim.
Prince fans were overjoyed about the news of a new collection of previously unheard music and took to Twitter to show just how elated they were and, of course, to represent the Purple One.
