Kym Whitley Says Mo’Nique Came To Her As A Woman About Gerald LeVert

On an upcoming episode of Uncensored, Actress Kym Whitley recalled the time Mo’Nique had a “woman to woman” conversation with her about Gerald LeVert with whom Whitley had a close relationship.

Whitley reminisced on her friendship and, at times, romantic dealings with LeVert.

“I don’t remember how Gerald and I met because we had been knowing each other since we were kids,” Whitley said.

Her parents were against her and LeVert being a couple because of his profession as a musician and his having come from a family of musicians. His father is Eddie LeVert of the legendary soul group The O’Jays.

Another reason that Whitley and the crooner did not make it as a couple at the time was ego. She claimed that he told her that she could pursue her Hollywood aspirations but there could only be one star in the relationship.

“You can pursue your career, but if you want to be with me, I’m going to let you know there can only be one star in this family.”

Obviously, Whitley chose to chase her dream and it paid off for her.

On top of that, LeVert was known the be the very casanova he sang about in his 1987 hit by the same name.

He dated a lot of women and Whitley said that even though they were friends, sometimes it caused problems. One of those problems came in the form of Mo’Nique, who was interested in LeVert at the time.

“She came up to me…and was like ‘Look, I want to date Gerald LeVert. I know y’all used to date or whatever but I’m coming to you as a woman to let you know I’m interested.’”

Whitley said she gave Mo’Nique her blessing after their conversation but wondered if she should have.

Whitley maintains that the reason she and LeVert never married was because of his death in 2006. He died of an accidental mix of prescription narcotics, over-the-counter pain medications and sinus medications.

Nonetheless, Whitley’s life has progressed. In 2011, she adopted a little boy named

Joshua Kaleb Whitley with her former partner Rodney Van Johnson.

Her episode will air this Sunday, Sept. 19 on TVOne.
