Frankie Lons, the biological mother of R&B singer Keyshia Cole, passed away on what would have been her 61st birthday on Sunday.

Cole’s sister Elite Noel, who is also a singer and entrepreneur, shared the tragic news via her Instagram Stories early July 19.  

“Worse pain ever…. to see my Mama in a body bag on her birthday. My heart so f**kin broke,” the caption read.

Lons’ decades-long struggle with drug addiction was a sore spot for her children, especially Cole. The sometimes strained relationship between the conflicted mother and her children

was highlighted on the BET reality series Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is.

The “I Changed My Mind” singer celebrated her mom’s decision to return to rehab in January 2020.

“​​Happy YOU DECIDED ON YOUR OWN, to check YOURSELF INTO a facility to get treatment,” she captioned a picture of her, Frankie and her two sons, “It’s only been two weeks, but I’m trying to be hopeful and optimistic.”

“Maybe that’s what’ll make THIS TIME different. This being what YOU WANTED AND NO ONE ELSE…….. Maybe this is the YEAR IN ALL ASPECTS !!!!! GREATNESS.”

In August 2018, Cole shared a touching video memory of Lons being clean and sober while sitting with the family on Instagram.  She posted a heartbreaking caption that mentioned her mom’s relapse.

“​​This was 2 1/2 years ago. Every time my mom relapse, it breaks my heart more than it’s already been broken. I’m hoping if any of u are dealing with a family member who’s battling with drug addiction, that you, yourself, are learning how to cope with the struggle of it all.” 

She continued, “And all the pain it brings to see a loved one constantly relapsing. See them go back to the streets Because that’s what they’re used to or would rather be. I really miss you! And will always love u

An official cause of death has not been reported. Our prayers go out to Frankie’s family.
