Former Mayor of Atlanta Keisha Lance Bottoms announced that she would be joining CNN as a political commentator. Bottoms made the announcement on Twitter on Feb. 7.
The politician noted in her announcement that she had once applied for a program at CNN as a college student but was not accepted. Thirty years later, she will work for the network as a political commentator and live her dream.
“I am thrilled to officially announce that I have joined @CNN as a Political Commentator,” she wrote. “As a @FAMU_1887 student, I applied for the coveted VJ program at @CNN and didn’t get in. To now join the team nearly 30 yrs later is a reminder that a dream deferred is never a dream denied.”
Bottoms is not new to the network. During the coronavirus pandemic, she frequently appeared on several television networks, including CNN. She was also a frequent guest during the 2020 elections.
The former mayor is a graduate of Florida A&M University. Bottoms surprised many when she opted not to run for a second term as Mayor of Atlanta. The charismatic woman was a broadcast journalism major at FAMU. She was also mentioned as a potential running mate for President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
While Bottoms didn’t specify her exact reasons for not seeking a second term as mayor, she did say it was time to pass the baton in an online letter.
“As Derek and I have given thoughtful prayer and consideration to the season now before us,” she wrote. “It is with deep emotions that I now hold my head high, and choose not to seek another term as mayor…. It is abundantly clear to me today that it is time to pass the baton on to someone else.”
