Vice President Kamala Harris attended a Howard University football game and kicked off the events by doing the coin toss.
The Truth and Service Classic football game was between Howard University, the Harris’ alma mater, and Hampton University, and it was held at Audi Field. Harris’ appearance was a surprise to attendees.
The game also marked a couple of firsts. Harris is the first graduate of an HBCU to land in the White House, reported
Axios.Further, the Howard vs. Hampton matchup is the first college football game to be played at Audi Field, which is where Major League Soccer team D.C. United plays.
In her official capacity, Harris performed the coin toss before the game began.
The coin landed in favor of Howard, however, we’re sure that was just a coincidence. Howard decided to defer to Hampton and the game began.
Of course, a regular quarter would not do for Harris. She used an official vice president coin with her name and designation as the “49th Vice President of the United States.”
In January, Howard celebrated the inauguration of one of its former students into the second-highest office in the country.
“She was singularly gifted at debate and had a hunger for knowledge and information. She combined her personal attributes and strength of character with a Howard education to forge a life dedicated to societal, not personal, advancement,” said
Howard President Wayne A. I. Frederick. That same day, Harris’ husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, threw out a pitch at Nats Park during the Washington Nationals baseball game.
In the end, Hampton beat Howard, 48-32. Not even having a vice presidential alum flipping the coin could save them from their fate.
