The New York Times’ latest documentary detailed the incidents leading to the infamous nipple scandal and its subsequent fallout during the 2004 Superbowl halftime show with Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson. It also fueled the hashtag #JusticeForJanet on Twitter– after the series never held Timberlake’s feet to the fire while network execs continued to deny any involvement in the scandal.
Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson premiered on Hulu and FX on Friday night. The documentary appeared to reignite some unresolved feelings towards Timberlake by Jackson’s fans regarding the white singer’s rise after Jackson’s career crashed and burned.
Even though Timberlake may want to forget his trash antics– fans on Twitter reminded the “Cry Me A River” singer that all is not forgiven for passing the buck of blame to the “All For You” artist.
One Twitter user, @mzshannon, dropped receipts in a Twitter thread that alleged the networks and Timberlake were fully aware of what was going down on that fateful night.
Some 14 years later, Timberlake apologized regarding the incident, Sister2Sister reported.
“I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism,” he said.
The Black delegation still doesn’t forgive him.
